Does Minnesota require a geologist seal?
No. Minn. R. 1800.4300 says a licensee may obtain a seal, and it treats a stamped seal as an addition to the signed and dated certification, never a substitute. The certification is the part the law demands.
Minn. R. 1800.4200, subp. 1 makes the certification and signature mandatory on any document that requires a signature, putting Minn. Stat. § 326.12, subd. 3 into effect. That statute ties your signature to a certification, your license number and the date you signed.

Which five entries make up the certification block?
Five items: the geologist certification sentence from Minn. R. 1800.4200, subp. 4, your signature, your name typed or printed, your license number and the date. Leave any one out and the block is incomplete.
In substance, the sentence says you prepared the plan, document or report yourself or had it prepared under your direct supervision, and that Minnesota law licenses you as a Professional Geologist. Copy the exact text from the rule into your template; this summary shows what it covers, not how it reads.
How does the geologist sentence differ from other professions?
In the thing it certifies. The geologist version speaks of "this plan, document, or report." The version for architects and engineers swaps in a specification as the middle item, and the surveyor version opens with a survey.
A block built from an engineer's template will carry the wrong middle noun, so proofread those three words on any stamp or title block. If you choose a seal, what does its face carry?
Your name and the legend licensed professional geologist, as set by Minn. R. 1800.4300. Minn. Stat. § 326.12, subd. 2 speaks more loosely of a geoscientist legend that the board defines, and the rule is where the exact words appear.
Your license number is not part of the seal's prescribed wording; it belongs in the certification block. A report with a correct block and no seal complies, while a seal on a report with no block does not.
Is there a required size or shape?
No. Neither Minn. Stat. § 326.12, subd. 2 nor Minn. R. 1800.4300 gives a dimension, and the board has published no figure of its own. Because the seal itself is optional, its size is left to you.
If you add one, choose a size that sits comfortably beside the certification block on your report pages without crowding the signature or the typed name.
Which devices does Minnesota recognize?
Under Minn. Stat. § 326.12, subds. 2 and 3, the optional seal is a regular seal, and a rubber stamp facsimile may stand in for it on tracings and on any paper the regular seal would harm.

On which page of a report does the certification belong?
On the certification page. Every report's certification page is expressly listed in Minn. R. 1800.4200, subp. 4a as something to sign and certify, and subpart 3 lets a bound report carry its certification on the title sheet, the first sheets or that page.
No rule asks you to sign across a seal. The rule also treats a certification as permanent once applied: it may not be taken off later for any reason.
Which plans and reports fall under the certification duty?
Any plan, document or report that requires a signature under the licensing statutes, Minn. Stat. §§ 326.02 to 326.15, with the certification page of each report called out by name in the rule.
The statute carves out intraoffice and intracompany documents. It also excludes drafts and preliminary, schematic or design development work, with the licensed professionals who would normally prepare such material deciding what falls in that group.
Is an electronic or digital certification valid in Minnesota?
Yes. Minn. R. 1800.4200, subp. 1 lets the certification and signature take electronic form, as Minn. Stat. § 325L.02, paragraph (h) defines it, or facsimile or digital form.
The chapter names no certificate authority, no cryptographic standard and no tamper evidence requirement. The one statutory limit is accuracy: a stamped, printed or electronically created signature counts as a real signature only if it accurately depicts yours.
What happens when a license expires or is suspended?
Sealing stops. Under Minn. Stat. § 326.12, subd. 2 you may use a seal only while your license is current and neither revoked nor suspended; applying it after expiry, revocation or suspension is unlawful until the license is renewed or reissued.
A certification already on a report stays where it is, since the rule forbids removing it later. Nothing in the provisions read here requires a seal to be surrendered.
What should you check before first use?
Proof the certification text word for word against Minn. R. 1800.4200, subp. 4, starting with the three nouns. Then confirm the block leaves room for your signature, typed or printed name, date and license number.
If you add the optional seal, check that it shows your name and the licensed professional geologist legend. Place a test certification, and the seal if you use one, on a sample report page and confirm every entry reads cleanly.
Frequently asked questions
If I already own a seal, may I keep using it?
Yes, while your license is current. Minn. R. 1800.4300 lets a stamped seal appear alongside the certification. It can never take the place of the signed and dated block.
Does the date mean the report date or the day I signed?
The day you signed. Minn. Stat. § 326.12, subd. 3 links the certification to the date the signature was affixed, not the date printed on the report cover.
Can I use a signature stamp in the block?
Minn. Stat. § 326.12, subd. 3 gives a stamped or printed signature the force of an actual signature only if it accurately depicts your own. The image has to be a true reproduction of how you sign.
Does a Minnesota geoscience firm need its own seal or number on reports?
The board registers firms offering geoscience services and issues a Firm Registration certificate, and professional firm status under Minn. Stat. ch. 319B is available separately. None of the rules read here requires the firm's number on your report. The firm has no seal of its own, because the certification speaks in the first person and names you as the licensee.
