Every Wyoming notary must use an official stamp: a rectangle about 1 inch by 2.5 inches, inked in blue or black, with five required text items inside a border. Two are fixed phrases, Notary Public and State of Wyoming; the others are your name, identification number and expiration line. Terms run six years, and each renewal calls for a new stamp. Below: wording, size, ink, embossers, renewal and notices.

Does Wyoming require a notary stamp?
Yes. Every Wyoming notary works with an official stamp, and the content it carries is set by Wyo. Stat. § 32-3-116(a)(ii)(D). The Wyoming Secretary of State is the commissioning authority, and it is the office you notify about your stamp and your record.
Because the statute fixes the text, a Wyoming stamp is not a design project. The job is getting your personal lines exactly right and fitting everything into a small rectangle. For the statute in context, see our overview of Wyoming notary stamp law.
What wording must appear on a Wyoming notary stamp?
Five text items, all enclosed by a border. The statute calls for your name as the commission certificate shows it, Notary Public, State of Wyoming, your identification number, and My commission expires with the date.
- Name: matched to your commission certificate, letter for letter.
- Notary Public: fixed text, identical on every Wyoming stamp.
- State of Wyoming: fixed text.
- Identification number: your own number, copied exactly.
- Expiration line: the phrase My commission expires, then your date.
- Border: an outline enclosing all of the text.
Two items are fixed phrases and three are personal to you, so checking a proof comes down to those three. For another look at the same list, read our Wyoming notary public seal guidelines.
Where should your name and number on the stamp come from?
From your commission paperwork, not from memory. The statute ties the name line to your commission certificate, so the stamp repeats the name exactly as the certificate prints it, including any middle initial or suffix that appears there.
Take the identification number and expiration date from the same paperwork. One transposed digit means a remake, so check each figure on the proof against the certificate before you approve it.
What size and shape does Wyoming set?
A rectangle of approximately 1 inch wide by 2.5 inches long. The measurements are given as approximate figures, but the shape is stated plainly, so a round or square notary stamp does not match the Wyoming description.
That small footprint has to hold five text items and a border. On a proof, make sure the smallest line stays readable at actual size. For a worked example, see our sample Wyoming notary stamp format.
Which ink colors can a Wyoming notary use?
Blue or black, and no other color. Wyoming writes the ink color into its notary statute and states the requirement twice, so red, green or purple ink is not an option for an official impression.
Settle the color when you order. A self-inking stamp ships with its ink already loaded, and any ink you add later should be blue or black as well.
Can an embosser replace the stamp in Wyoming?
No. The Wyoming rules never mention an embosser by name, and an embosser cannot serve in place of the official stamp. The device you need is an inked rectangle that carries the required text.
A raised seal leaves no ink on the page, while Wyoming requires the stamp to print in blue or black. Buy the inked stamp as your official device. The rules are silent on embossers altogether, including any use alongside the stamp.

How long does a Wyoming commission last, and why is a new stamp needed?
A Wyoming commission runs six years, a long term by national standards. The statute itself orders a new stamp for every renewed term, so the new stamp is a legal duty in its own right, not just a side effect of a changed expiration date.
Build the reorder into your renewal so the new stamp is ready when the new term begins. For the renewal side, see our guide to Wyoming notary stamp renewal.
Does the new-stamp rule apply to electronic stamps?
Yes. The Wyoming Secretary of State confirms that the new-stamp duty at each renewed term covers the stamp whether it is physical or electronic. A notary who works in both formats replaces both when the commission renews.
The duty follows the commission term, not the medium the stamp is used in. Order the physical stamp and set up any electronic stamp for the new term at the same time.
What must you report to the Wyoming Secretary of State?
Two kinds of notice. Report any change in the information on file within 30 days, and report a lost or stolen stamp promptly, using the method the Secretary of State sets out.
The loss requirement is framed as prompt notice rather than a count of days. Report as soon as you know the stamp is gone, and keep a note of when and how you gave notice.
What do you need on hand to order a Wyoming notary stamp?
Your commission certificate, your identification number and your expiration date, plus a choice of blue or black ink. Notary Public, State of Wyoming, the expiration phrase and the border are fixed, so they need nothing from you.
If your commission has not issued yet, wait for the certificate, because the name line has to match it. Our article on becoming a notary in Wyoming covers the steps before that point, and our plain-language rundown of Wyoming stamp requirements makes a handy checklist beside the order form.
How should you check a new Wyoming stamp before first use?
Stamp a blank sheet and read it against your commission certificate. Confirm that every required item is present, the border is unbroken, the ink is blue or black, and the impression measures close to 1 by 2.5 inches.
Look hardest at the name, number and date, since those are the only lines that differ from one notary to the next. If anything is off, have the stamp corrected before it goes on any document.
Frequently asked questions
Does moving to a new address mean ordering a new stamp?
Not because of the stamp's content. None of the required items is an address, so a move leaves the printed text unchanged. You still owe the Secretary of State notice within 30 days, since your address is part of the information on file.
What happens to my stamp if my name changes?
Report the change to the Secretary of State within 30 days. The stamp has to show your name as your commission certificate does, so once your record carries the new name, order a stamp that matches it.
Does the blue or black rule cover self-inking and pre-inked stamps alike?
Yes. The requirement concerns the color of the official impression, not the mechanism behind it, so a self-inking stamp, a pre-inked stamp and a stamp used with a pad all need blue or black ink.
How much leeway does "approximately" give on size?
The rule gives the size as approximate, so a stamp built to about 1 by 2.5 inches fits it without being measured to the fraction. A stamp with clearly different proportions no longer matches the rectangle the rule describes.
Who commissions Wyoming notaries?
The Wyoming Secretary of State. That office is the commissioning authority, and it is also where the 30-day change notices and lost stamp reports go.
