An Alaska professional engineer stamps final documents with the seal and then signs the seal itself. The face carries your registered name, the State of Alaska and profession legends, and a numerals-only registration number with a two-character branch identifier ahead of it. The date sits in the seal or no more than two inches away. This page covers wording, size, devices, signing, electronic sealing and lapse.

What does an Alaska professional engineer seal have to show?
The Alaska engineer seal carries your registered name, the State of Alaska legend, the profession legend, your registration number in numerals, a two-character branch identifier in front of that number, and a signature space inside the seal.
The branch identifier needs care. It is two characters long and it comes before the number, not after it and not on a line of its own. Give us the identifier that applies to the branch you are registered in, and we set it ahead of your number.
The statute also lists a date among the seal items, and it allows that date to sit inside the seal or anywhere within two inches of it. That flexibility helps when a title block is tight. Earlier guidance on these same items appears in our Alaska PE stamp guidelines.

How big is an Alaska engineer seal, and what shape does it take?
The rules cited on this page set no diameter and no shape for the Alaska engineer seal. The seal made for Alaska engineers is cut to 2 inches, which is a manufacturing standard for this state rather than a size any Alaska rule imposes.
A plan reviewer therefore has no Alaska measurement to hold your seal against. What a reviewer can compare is the design: 12 AAC 36.180 approves the seal it illustrates, so the layout of your seal should follow that picture. At 2 inches the face has room for the legends, your name and number, and a signature space inside the seal.
For more on how the Alaska face is arranged, see our write-up on Alaska PE stamp design standards.
Which devices can apply an Alaska engineer seal?
12 AAC 36.180 accepts the seal design it illustrates, or an electronic or digital version substantially similar to it. That wording expressly authorizes an electronic seal alongside the illustrated design itself.
For paper sets, choose the tool around the signing step. The statute tells you to sign the seal, and the design puts a signature space inside it, so pick an impression you can sign across and that stays readable once signed. If you are weighing a raised impression, our article on the Alaska engineer embosser seal looks at that option.

How do you sign and date an Alaska engineer seal?
You sign the seal itself. Alaska Stat. § 08.48.221(a) directs registrants to stamp documents with the seal and then sign that seal. The seal artwork the Board publishes also prints a caption within the seal calling for an original signature, so you sign in or across it.
Signing in the margin next to the seal does not follow that instruction. Because the Board's artwork asks for an original signature, sign by hand inside the seal area on paper.
Place the date in the seal or no more than two inches from its edge. If the seal face is crowded once you have signed, date just outside the seal, keeping within that two inch limit.
Which Alaska documents need the engineer seal?
Sealing is reserved for final work: drawings, surveys and reports, plus the construction documents that are required, and only where you are qualified for the work and accept responsibility for it. 12 AAC 36.185(a)(3) draws that line.
The qualification limit cuts both ways. A final report inside your field and under your responsibility takes the seal. A document outside your qualifications does not, even when a client would like a stamped copy, because the rule ties the seal to work you are qualified for and answer for. The provisions behind this are 12 Alaska Admin. Code §§ 36.185(a), (b), (i), 36.190, 36.195.
Can Alaska engineers seal documents electronically?
Yes. 12 AAC 36.180 allows an electronic or digital version of the seal when it stays substantially similar to the illustration. A digital signature used with it has to pass four tests set out in 12 Alaska Admin. Code §§ 36.180, 36.185(f)(2).
The four tests for the digital signature:
- It belongs to you alone and is not shared with another registrant.
- It can be verified.
- It stays under your exclusive control.
- It is bound to the document, so any later change to the file invalidates the signature.
Keep your electronic seal in step with the illustrated design. The rule accepts a version substantially similar to that design, so match its content and layout rather than building a new arrangement for the screen.
What happens to your Alaska seal when your certificate expires?
After expiration you may not affix your seal and signature to anything, and you may not let anyone else affix them for you. Alaska Stat. § 08.48.221(a) also forbids sealing to help another person evade, or try to evade, the licensing chapter.
Renewal runs under AS 08.48.231, which hands the process to AS 08.01.100, Alaska's centralized licensing statute. Keep the seal out of use during any gap between expiration and renewal. Our earlier article on Alaska PE stamp requirements is a companion read on the same statute.
Who regulates engineer seals in Alaska?
The regulator for this seal is the Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers, and Land Surveyors. The duty to seal and sign is written into statute at Alaska Stat. § 08.48.221(a), and the Board's regulations, including 12 AAC 36.180, govern how the seal looks and its electronic form.
So a question about when to seal starts in the statute, and a question about the seal's look or electronic form starts in the Board's regulations.
What should you send when ordering an Alaska engineer seal?
Send your registered name, your registration number in numerals, your two-character branch identifier and the device you want. The State of Alaska legend, the profession legend and the interior signature space are part of every Alaska engineer seal.
Double-check the number before you submit it. If you also seal electronically, keep the electronic version's content identical to the stamp you order so the two never disagree.
How do you check an Alaska seal impression before first use?
Stamp a test sheet and read it item by item: the State of Alaska legend, your registered name, the profession legend, the branch identifier sitting ahead of a numerals-only number, and an open signature space inside the seal.
Then sign inside the seal and date it the way you will on a live sheet, in the seal or close beside it within the two inch limit. If your signature covers the name or number, or the date will not fit where you planned, sort it out now rather than on a submitted set.
Frequently asked questions
My registration number includes letters. What goes on the seal?
Only the numerals. The number on an Alaska seal excludes letter characters. The branch identifier is a separate two-character item placed in front of the number.
Does an Alaska engineer seal need an expiration date?
An expiration date is not among the items listed under Alaska Stat. § 08.48.221(a). The one date that list does include goes in the seal, or up to two inches from it.
Can I apply the seal to preliminary drawings?
Under 12 AAC 36.185(a)(3), the seal goes only on final work: drawings, surveys and reports, along with construction documents that are required. Preliminary drawings are not on that list.
Does the electronic seal rule cover architects and surveyors too?
Yes. 12 AAC 36.180 allows an electronic or digital version of the illustrated design for every profession the rule covers, so the electronic option is not limited to engineers.
What happens to a firm's certificate of authorization that is not renewed?
Under 12 AAC 36.165, a certificate of authorization held by a corporation, LLC, LLP or LP that goes five years without renewal lapses once that five-year stretch ends. The firm then has to apply for reinstatement.
