A Utah land surveyor seal is a circle at least 1.5 inches in diameter showing your name as licensed, your license number, State of Utah and Professional Land Surveyor. You may seal with a wet stamp, an embosser or an electronically produced seal. Your signature and date go across the face of the seal. This page covers wording, size, devices, signing, electronic use, documents and ordering.

Licensed in more than one place? Check each jurisdiction in land surveyor seal requirements by state. The route to a Utah surveying license, from education through the exams, sits in the national table on land surveyor licensing requirements.
What must a Utah land surveyor seal include?
Five things under Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(a), (b). The seal must be circular, and inside it go the phrase State of Utah, the title Professional Land Surveyor, your license number and your name as it appears on your license.
Take the name and number from your license, not from a business card or firm letterhead. For layout detail, see our article on Utah land surveyor seal design specifications.

How large is the Utah seal?
At least 1.5 inches in diameter, and circular. Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(a) sets a minimum only, so a round seal of 1.5 inches or larger satisfies the size rule for surveyors.
A larger die gives the signature and date more room, which matters because both go across the face. Weigh that against the space your title block allows before you settle on a diameter.
Which devices can a Utah surveyor use?
Three: an embossed seal, a wet stamp, or a seal produced electronically. Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(e) names all three and permits each of them for the required seal.
The embosser allowance is specific to this rule. The Utah architect rule does not address embossers, so a surveyor who also holds an architect license should not assume the same answer carries across. For a second look at the device question, read our summary of Utah land surveyor stamp and seal requirements.

Where do the signature and date go?
Across the face of the seal. Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(c), (d), (f) has you sign and date so that both run over the seal impression itself rather than sitting off to one side of it.
Leave the center of the die open enough for a signature to cross it and still be read. Test the fit on scrap paper before your first real sheet, especially if your signature is large.
Can the seal be electronically produced?
Yes. Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(e), (f), (g) counts an electronically produced seal among the three allowed forms, on equal footing with the wet stamp and the embosser, so a digital seal needs no special justification.
Build the electronic version from the same artwork as your stamp, so the wording and the circular 1.5 inch format match across paper and digital files.
Are electronic signatures accepted?
Yes. The rule accepts signatures that are generated electronically, under Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(e), (f), (g), so the seal and the signature can both be electronic on a Utah survey.
When you set up an electronic workflow, position the signature and date across the seal image the same way you would on paper, so the document follows the placement rule above.
Which documents need the seal?
All final plats, surveys, maps, sketches, drawings, plans, reports and specifications, plus other final documents, that you prepare or that are prepared under your supervision. The list appears in Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(d), (g), (h), R156-22-502(1).
The list is broad, and it follows the work rather than the person holding the pen. Our handbook on Utah land surveyor stamp and seal regulations goes further into these duties.
What happens to the seal when a license lapses?
The seal rule is silent on lapse (Utah Admin. Code R156-22-304, R156-22-305). Nothing in the seal provisions tells you to surrender, destroy or stop using the device when a license lapses.
Because the seal rule is silent here, this page does not tell you what to do with the device after a lapse. Keep your renewal current so the question does not come up in the middle of a live project.
What should you have ready when you order?
Your name as licensed and your license number, plus the diameter you want at 1.5 inches or more and the device type. State of Utah and Professional Land Surveyor are fixed wording on every surveyor seal.
If you will use two forms, such as a wet stamp for paper and an electronic seal for files, order both from one artwork so they read the same. Our guide to choosing a Utah land surveyor stamp and seal supplier covers what to ask a vendor.
How do you check the first impression?
Stamp a test sheet and measure the circle: it should be 1.5 inches or larger. Then read the four lines of text back against your license, including the exact words State of Utah and Professional Land Surveyor.
Finish by signing and dating across the test impression. If the signature swamps the lettering, a larger die may suit your hand better.

Frequently asked questions
Do sketches need to be sealed in Utah?
Yes, when they are final. Sketches appear on the list of final documents that must carry the seal, alongside plats, surveys, maps and drawings.
Can I seal a plat my technician drafted?
Yes, if it was prepared under your supervision. The sealing duty covers final documents prepared by you or under your supervision, so supervised work carries your seal.
Can the seal read Land Surveyor without the word Professional?
No. The rule's wording is Professional Land Surveyor, so a seal that drops Professional does not carry the title Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(a), (b) calls for.
Do I need an embosser in addition to a wet stamp?
No. The rule allows three forms, wet, embossed or electronic, and any single one of them can serve as your seal on its own.
Can my electronic seal be smaller than 1.5 inches to fit a CAD title block?
The 1.5 inch minimum diameter is stated for the seal, and electronic production is simply one of the ways that seal may be made. Keep the electronic version at 1.5 inches or more.
