The Path to Professionalism: Wyoming Geologist Certification Requirements Unveiled Feature Image

Wyoming law requires a geologist's seal to carry the words professional geologist, your full name and your license number, in a design the Board establishes. Documents you offer to the public also need your signature, the date and your license number written out separately. The statute sets no size, device or electronic rule. This page covers what the statute fixes, what it leaves open and the lapse ban.

What does the Wyoming statute put on a geologist's seal?

Three items, under Wyo. Stat. § 33-41-115(b): the words professional geologist, your full name, and your license number. The statute stops at those three and hands the rest of the design to the Board.

Use your full name, not initials, since that is the form the statute names. Our walkthrough of Wyoming geologist seal requirements covers the same three elements from another angle.

Who decides how the seal looks?

The Board. Wyo. Stat. § 33-41-115(b) (design delegated to the board) leaves the design to the licensing board rather than drawing it in the statute. The Board keeps its rules in chapters on file with the Wyoming Secretary of State.

This page reports the statute only. Any layout, border or wording the Board has added by rule would sit in those filed chapters, and we have not confirmed their contents, so match your order to the Board's established design. Acquiring the Wyoming geologist seal and stamp covers the ordering side.

What goes on a document besides the seal?

Your signature, the date and your license number as separate text. Wyo. Stat. § 33-41-115(c) makes all three statutory, so the number appears twice: once inside the seal and once in the document's own particulars.

Build those lines into your title block or signature area so they are never skipped. If a sheet shows the seal and your signature but no date or separate number, it falls short of subsection (c).

What size and shape does Wyoming require?

The statute does not say. Wyo. Stat. § 33-41-115(b) (design delegated to the board) contains no diameter, no shape and no lettering height. Any figure would come from the Board's design, and we have not verified one, so none is given here.

Until you have the Board's design in hand, treat any quoted Wyoming geologist diameter as unconfirmed. Within that design, choose a size that keeps your full name readable, since full names run longer than initials.

Which device types does the statute allow?

It names none. Under Wyo. Stat. § 33-41-115 (device type not prescribed), an embosser, a rubber stamp and an electronic image are all left unaddressed, neither granted nor barred. A device rule, if one exists, would be in the Board's rules. We have not verified those.

Practically, documents offered to the public are often copied and scanned, and an inked impression shows on a copy where a raised one without ink may not. For device options, see our note on getting a Wyoming geologist stamp.

Is an electronic seal allowed?

The statute is silent. Wyo. Stat. § 33-41-115 says nothing about electronic or digital seals and sets no standard for signatures. A rule on either point would have to come from the Board; we have not verified one.

That silence is not the same as a permission. Before you rely on a seal image in a file, confirm what the Board's rules say.

Which documents must carry the seal?

All documents offered to the public that a professional geologist prepared or issued, or that were prepared or issued under a professional geologist's supervision. The citation is Wyo. Stat. §§ 33-41-102(a)(viii), 33-41-115(c).

The test turns on offering a document to the public, and it reaches supervised work as well as your own. Each such document then carries the seal together with the signature, date and separate license number described above.

Can you use the seal after your license expires?

No. Wyo. Stat. § 33-41-115(d) makes it unlawful to affix the seal to any document while the named licensee's license is expired, suspended or revoked. The bar lifts once the license is renewed or reissued.

Expiration sits on the same footing as suspension and revocation. A missed renewal is enough to stop the seal from going on documents until the license is back in force.

Does the lapse ban apply to staff as well as the licensee?

Yes. The prohibition in Wyo. Stat. § 33-41-115(d) is addressed to any individual, not only to the geologist named on the seal. An assistant who stamps a document on a lapsed license is covered too.

That makes custody of the device a practical concern. Keep the seal where only you control it, and tell anyone who handles your documents when your renewal is pending.

What should you have ready when ordering?

Your full name exactly as it should read, the license number, and the Board's established design. The words professional geologist are fixed by statute, so they appear on the seal no matter which layout the Board has set.

Tell us which device you want and any size the Board's design specifies. Our overview of the Wyoming geologist seal and stamp has more on the formats available.

How do you check the first impression?

Stamp a blank sheet and check the three statutory items: the words professional geologist, your full name spelled correctly, and every digit of the license number. Then compare the layout with the Board's design.

Add your signature, the date and your license number as text on the test sheet, the way a finished document will carry them, and copy it. If anything drops out, fix it before the seal goes on work offered to the public.

Frequently asked questions

Does the seal need to say Wyoming?

The statute lists three items: the words professional geologist, your full name and your license number. A state name is not among them, though the Board's design governs the rest of the layout.

Once my license is renewed, can I use the same seal again?

Yes. The ban in Wyo. Stat. § 33-41-115(d) runs until the license is renewed or reissued. After renewal, nothing in that subsection stops you from affixing the seal.

Does the license number inside the seal cover the separate number requirement?

No. Wyo. Stat. § 33-41-115(c) calls for the license number as its own text on the document, in addition to the seal that already carries it.

Is a diameter quoted by a supplier a legal requirement?

Not under the statute, which gives no figure. A size becomes binding only if it comes from the Board's established design.

Can I order a seal with Licensed Professional Geologist on it?

The statute calls for the words professional geologist. Order that wording unless the Board's design shows something different.

When you have the Board's design and your license details together, choose your device from our Wyoming geologist seals and stamps, and check the proof against the three statutory items before approving it.
