Utah Landscape Architect Feature Image: A spiral notebook with a blue 'State of Utah Licensed Landscape Architect' seal stamp on a yellow background.

A Utah landscape architect seal must be circular, at least 1 1/2 inches in diameter, and carry the name on your license, your license number, State of Utah and Licensed Landscape Architect. A wet stamp, an embosser or an electronic seal all qualify. Your signature and date go across the face of each imprint. This page covers the face, size, devices, signing, final site plans and lapse.

What must a Utah landscape architect seal show?

Four entries inside a circular seal, per Utah Admin. Code R156-53-601: the name on your license, your license number, State of Utah as the jurisdiction line, and Licensed Landscape Architect as the title. The circle itself is listed as a requirement too.

Copy your name the way your license shows it, and spell the title out. Licensed Landscape Architect is the wording the rule uses, and State of Utah is the jurisdiction line. For a line by line reading of these entries, see our breakdown of Utah landscape architect stamp guidelines.

What size and shape does Utah require?

A circle at least 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Utah Admin. Code R156-53-601 fixes the round outline and states that 1 1/2 inch figure as the floor, so the smallest acceptable seal is set by rule.

Size the die so the four entries stay readable with a signature and date written over them. Because the signature crosses the face, a seal at the minimum leaves less clear space than a slightly larger circle. Our summary of Utah landscape architect seal requirements covers the size rule alongside the rest.

Which devices does Utah allow?

Three: a wet stamp, an embossed seal, or a seal produced electronically. Utah Admin. Code R156-53-601 permits each one, so an embosser on its own is a lawful way to apply the required seal in Utah.

Think about the signature and date that cross the face. Ink writes cleanly over an inked impression, while a raised embossed mark is harder to read through handwriting and on copies. An inked stamp is the easier surface to sign across.

How does the Utah rule treat electronic seals?

Utah accepts them. Utah Admin. Code R156-53-601 lists electronic production alongside wet stamps and embossing, and it places a security obligation on the electronic form, matching the one set for Utah's other design professions, without naming any technology.

This page does not set out what that security duty requires, because the source it relies on names the duty without describing it. Read Utah Admin. Code R156-53-601 itself before you adopt an electronic workflow, and keep the four entries legible in the file you deliver.

Where do the signature and date go?

Across the face of each seal imprint. Utah Admin. Code R156-53-601 has you sign and date every imprint so that both the signature and the date lie over the seal itself, not beside it.

That placement affects how you apply the seal. Leave room to write across the impression, use a pen that shows clearly over the printed lines, and check that the four required entries can still be read once the signature is on.

Which documents need the seal?

Final site plans. Utah Admin. Code R156-53-601 ties the sealing duty to all final site plans, and the word final sets the scope: the rule is written around the finished plan set.

Seal the final version, with the signature and date across each imprint. For a wider tour of the Utah rule, see our overview of Utah landscape architect stamp regulations.

Does work prepared under your supervision need your seal?

Yes. The Utah rule covers final site plans prepared under the licensee's supervision as well as those the licensee prepares personally, so a supervised plan carries the supervising landscape architect's seal, signature and date.

Your seal speaks for the plan whether you drew it or directed it, so review a supervised set with the same care as your own before you seal it.

What does the seal rule say about lapse or renewal?

Nothing. The seal provision in Utah Admin. Code R156-53 is silent on renewal, on lapse, and on what becomes of the seal when a license is no longer current. No step is set for the device itself.

None of the required entries is a date, so a renewal gives the face nothing to change. What the rule leaves unanswered is use during a lapse, so hold off on sealing any final site plan until your license is current.

What should you supply when ordering?

The name on your license, your license number, the device type, and the diameter, which must be at least 1 1/2 inches. The words State of Utah and Licensed Landscape Architect are fixed by the rule, so they need no input from you.

If you plan to seal electronically as well, say so, since an electronic version is a separate format from a wet stamp or an embosser. See our look at the Utah professional landscape architect stamp for more on the finished product.

How do you check a new Utah seal before first use?

Make a test imprint, measure it, and read it. The circle should measure at least 1 1/2 inches across, and the licensed name, license number, State of Utah and Licensed Landscape Architect should all be legible.

Then sign and date across the test imprint the way you will on a final site plan. If your handwriting hides a required entry, or a copy of the signed imprint loses detail, adjust the size or the device before first use.

Frequently asked questions

Do preliminary or review sets need the Utah seal?

Utah Admin. Code R156-53-601 frames the sealing duty around final site plans. Preliminary and review sets are not among the documents it names.

Is there a maximum size?

No maximum is given. The rule states only the 1 1/2 inch minimum, so a larger circle stays within it. Size the die to fit the signature and date you write across it.

Can the seal include my firm name or an expiration date?

Neither appears among the items Utah Admin. Code R156-53-601 lists for the seal. The list stops at the licensed name, the license number, State of Utah and Licensed Landscape Architect, set in a circle.

Can I abbreviate Licensed Landscape Architect?

The rule calls for the words Licensed Landscape Architect and offers no short form. Spell the title out in full on the face of the seal.

Does a rubber stamp count as a wet stamp?

Yes. A wet stamp is an inked stamp, which is what a rubber stamp produces, so an inked rubber stamp falls within the devices Utah Admin. Code R156-53-601 permits.
