What goes on the face of a Utah PE seal?
Four items under Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(b): the name on your license, your license number, the words State of Utah, and the title you are licensed under. The rule's title options are Professional Structural Engineer, Professional Engineer and Professional Land Surveyor.
- Name: as it reads on your license.
- License number: your Utah number.
- State line: State of Utah.
- Title: the one your license actually carries.

How big must a Utah PE seal be?
At least 1-1/2 inches in diameter, and round. Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(a) describes the seal as circular with a minimum diameter of 1-1/2 inches, so a die at or above that figure meets the size rule.
Size also matters for signing. Your signature and date have to cross the impression, so a die with open space inside the ring makes that easier to do legibly. Because the published figure is a floor, ordering at 1-1/2 inches or a little larger keeps you inside the rule.
Which devices can make a Utah seal?
Three, and each carries the same legal standing under Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(e): a wet stamp, an embossed seal, or a seal produced electronically. The copy requirement, though, makes one of them the safer choice for paper sets.
An impression that is only embossed often fails to show up on a photocopy or scan, and the seal, signature and date have to stay recognizable on copies. A rubber or self-inking stamp with ink, sized 1-1/2 inches or more, avoids that problem. An embosser can still sit alongside it.
Where do the signature and date go on a Utah seal?
Across the seal. Under Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(c), (d), (f), (h), your signature and the date both have to run physically across the stamp impression. Writing them beside the seal does not meet that wording.

Does a sealed Utah document have to survive copying?
Yes. The seal, signature and date have to remain recognizable when a sealed document is copied, a test found in the provisions cited at Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(c), (d), (f), (h). An impression that fades out on a copy fails it.
This is the practical reason to favor ink over an embosser alone for paper work. If you prefer the look of an embossed seal, photocopy an embossed test sheet before relying on it, and check that all three elements show.
Which Utah documents need a PE seal?
All final work you prepare or supervise: drawings, plans, plats, maps, sketches, surveys, specifications, reports and other documents. The duty comes from Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(a), (g) and turns on two points, that the item is final and that it came from you or your supervision.
Because the list is broad, treat anything final that leaves your office under your license as something to seal. Work prepared under your supervision counts the same as work you drafted yourself.
Can a Utah engineer use an electronic seal?
Yes. An electronically produced seal is one of the three permitted forms, and Utah Admin. Code R156-22-601(1)(e), (f), (g) does not name any particular technology for it. No specific software or signing product is required by name.
If you issue both paper and digital sets, keep the electronic image identical to your physical die. That way only one version of your seal is in circulation, and each copy shows the same four items.
How does renewal affect a Utah PE seal?
Utah licenses renew every two years, with the cycle ending on March 31 of each odd-numbered year, and renewal carries 30 hours of continuing professional education under Utah Admin. Code R156-22-304, R156-22-305.

What should you have ready when ordering a Utah PE seal?

Finish with a copy test. Photocopy or scan the signed sample and confirm the seal, signature and date are all still recognizable on the copy.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Utah seal be larger than 1-1/2 inches?
Yes. The rule states 1-1/2 inches as a minimum diameter, and a stamp at that size or larger fits it. Extra diameter also leaves more room to sign across the face.
Is a square or oval seal acceptable in Utah?
No. R156-22-601(1)(a) calls for a circular seal, so the outline has to be round.
Does a Utah seal need an expiration date or a discipline line?
Neither appears among the four items in R156-22-601(1)(b), which are your name, license number, State of Utah and your licensed title.
Can I use a seal from another state for Utah work?
Only if it meets the Utah rule in full: round, at least 1-1/2 inches, and showing State of Utah, your Utah license number, your licensed name and your licensed title. A seal cut for another state does not meet the rule unless it carries State of Utah.
