An Alaska land surveyor seal must show a State of Alaska legend, the title Registered Professional Land Surveyor, your name as registered, your registration number in numerals only, and a signature space inside the seal. The date goes inside the seal or no more than two inches from it. The rule states no size at all. This page covers the face, devices, signing, sealing duty and expiration.

What does an Alaska land surveyor seal have to show?
Six items under Alaska Stat. § 08.48.221(a): a State of Alaska legend, the title Registered Professional Land Surveyor, your name as registered, your registration number, a signature space inside the seal, and a date placed in or near it.
Two of those items, the signature and the date, are added when you sign rather than printed by the device, which shapes the layout. The name should match your registration record exactly, since that is the form the rule names. Our summary of Alaska land surveyor stamp requirements walks through each line of the face.

How should the registration number appear?
As numerals only. The element list calls for your registration number in numeric characters, so any letters that appear alongside the number on other paperwork stay off the seal. The digits themselves should match your registration exactly.
This is the line most worth checking on a proof. A number that carries extra characters is not the element the rule describes, however tidy the rest of the face looks.
Where do the signature and date go?
The signature goes in the space inside the seal. The date goes in the seal or no more than two inches away. Alaska Stat. § 08.48.221(a) requires you to stamp the document with the seal and then sign the seal itself.
The pictured board design carries an interior caption reading Affix Original Signature, which marks the signing space. Leave room on the sheet for the date if you plan to write it outside the impression, and keep it within the two inch limit. Our piece on what the Alaska land surveyor seal signals on your work explains why the signed impression carries weight.
What size should the seal be?
The rule does not say. 12 Alaska Admin. Code § 36.180 defines the seal with an illustration rather than measurements, and the text gives no diameter, no tolerance and no inner circle measurement.
So the size is a practical choice. The face has to hold four lines of text plus a signature space you can actually write in, which argues against a very small die. Our notes on Alaska surveyor seal design show how the pictured layout translates to a physical device.
Does Alaska say whether to use an embosser or an ink stamp?
No. The cited provisions speak of the pictured design and of an electronic or digital rendering of it. They do not choose between an embosser and an inked stamp for the physical seal.
What the rule does fix is that you sign inside the seal and may date inside it too. Pick a device whose impression gives you a surface you can write on and read afterward. Our guide to choosing an Alaska land surveyor stamp compares the options.
Is an electronic seal allowed in Alaska?
Yes. 12 Alaska Admin. Code § 36.180 accepts the illustrated design or an electronic or digital version of it that is substantially similar to that design. An electronic seal therefore has express authority, provided it follows the pictured layout closely.
The phrase substantially similar sets the standard. A digital seal that rearranges the elements, drops the signature space or changes the legend wording moves away from the pictured design the rule treats as the reference.

What must a digital signature do?
It must meet four conditions under 12 Alaska Admin. Code §§ 36.180, 36.185(f)(2): be unique to you, be verifiable, stay under your exclusive control, and be bound to the document so that any change to the document invalidates it.
Whatever signing method you adopt, confirm it meets each of the four before you rely on it for a sealed file.
Which surveying documents get the seal?
Final drawings, surveys, reports and required construction documents. 12 Alaska Admin. Code § 36.185(a)(3) confines sealing to those final documents, and only where you are qualified for the work and take responsibility for it.
Both conditions matter. Qualification and responsibility come before the stamp, so a final survey outside your competence is not one you should seal.
What if someone else prepared part of the document?
Seal only your part. Where other people prepared other portions, the rule limits your seal to the portion within your direct professional knowledge and under your direct supervisory control. Everything else stays outside your seal.
On a shared set, it helps to note on the sheet which portion your seal covers. The rule ties the seal to what you actually know and directly controlled, not to the whole package.
Can you seal after your certificate expires?
No. Alaska Stat. § 08.48.221(a) bars you from affixing your seal and signature to an instrument, or permitting anyone else to affix them, after your certificate has expired. The same provision bars using them to help another person evade the chapter.
Renewal is handled under Alaska Stat. § 08.48.231 together with the centralized licensing statute, AS 08.01.100. Keep the renewal current and the seal stays usable; let it lapse and the seal has to stay in the drawer until you renew.
What should you send with an order?
Your name exactly as registered, your registration number in digits only, and whether you want a physical seal, an electronic version, or both. The legend and title wording come from the rule, so you do not need to supply them.
Tell us how you plan to date your sheets, inside the seal or beside it, so the layout leaves the right space. For background on the device itself, read our guide to the Alaska land surveyor stamp.
How do you check a new seal before using it?
Stamp a test sheet and confirm the State of Alaska legend, the Registered Professional Land Surveyor title, your registered name and a digits-only number. Then sign inside the signature space and write a date to confirm both fit.
For an electronic seal, compare it with the pictured design element by element. If the layout has drifted from that picture, it may no longer be substantially similar, and that is the test the rule applies.
Frequently asked questions
Does Alaska require a round seal?
The rule states no shape in words. It prescribes the seal as a picture, so the pictured design is the reference for the outline as well as for the layout.
Can I rearrange the elements to fit my name?
Keep to the pictured design. A physical seal follows the illustrated layout, and an electronic seal is accepted only when it is substantially similar to that design.
Can I keep sealing while a renewal is being processed?
The statute bars affixing your seal and signature after the certificate expires. The provisions cited on this page describe no grace period for pending renewals.
Should I seal a preliminary or draft survey?
The sealing rule lists final drawings, surveys, reports and required construction documents. A draft is not on that list.
Does the digital signature have to use a particular technology?
The cited rules name none. They set four conditions instead: unique to you, verifiable, under your exclusive control, and invalidated by any change to the document.
