A Rhode Island professional engineer stamp must carry the name you are registered under, your serial number and the legend Registered Professional Engineer, plus your engineering discipline where one has been assigned. The law accepts the seal or a facsimile, and every sealed document must be dated. Electronic sealing depends on the receiving agency. This page covers the face, devices, signing, documents, electronic plans and lapse.

What must a Rhode Island engineer stamp show?
Three fixed elements and one conditional one, under 430-RICR-00-00-1.3.1(E)(1). Every stamp carries your registered name, your serial number and the legend Registered Professional Engineer, and it adds your engineering discipline when one has been assigned to you.
- Registered name: exactly as your registration shows it.
- Serial number: the rule's term for the number that goes on the stamp.
- Legend: Registered Professional Engineer, word for word.
- Discipline: only when one has been assigned.
The legend uses Registered, so a die carrying any other title does not match the rule. A second walk through these elements is in our Rhode Island PE stamp requirements explained.

Does every Rhode Island engineer put a discipline on the stamp?
No. The discipline line is conditional: 430-RICR-00-00-1.3.1(E)(1) calls for your assigned engineering discipline only where one has been assigned. If none has been assigned to you, the stamp carries the other three elements alone.
Check your registration before ordering so the stamp reflects your actual status. Adding a discipline you were not assigned, or leaving off one you were, puts the face out of line with the rule.
What size and shape is the Rhode Island engineer stamp?
The cited rules set neither a size nor a shape. The Rhode Island professional engineer stamp is manufactured as a 2 inch square, which is a production standard for this state rather than a dimension or outline that any cited rule requires.
Treat the 2 inch square as the standard build, not as a legal specification. What the rules do fix is the content, so confirm your name, serial number, legend and any discipline all fit and read clearly on the proof. More on the layout is in our notes on Rhode Island PE stamp design.
Which devices and facsimiles does Rhode Island accept?
The seal itself or a facsimile of it. R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-8-14 refers to documents stamped with the seal or a facsimile, and the Board's rule uses the combined term stamp/seal throughout, so the device choice is broad.
- Inked rubber stamp: accepted.
- Self-inking stamp: accepted.
- Embosser: accepted.
- Printed or electronic facsimile: accepted, with electronic plans subject to the agency condition below.
Because a facsimile is expressly allowed, the choice comes down to how you issue documents. For practical use across sets, see our page on using a Rhode Island engineer seal on your documents.

How are sealed Rhode Island documents signed and dated?
R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-8-14 groups three items that go on a sealed document together and makes the date mandatory. The Board's rule at § 1.3.1(E)(2) describes documents as signed and stamped with the stamp/seal or its facsimile.
In practice, no sealed document should leave your office undated, since the date is the one element the statute expressly marks as mandatory. Build a date field next to the seal location on your title block so it is never skipped.
Which Rhode Island documents need the stamp?
Final engineering drawings, specifications, plats and reports, at the point they are issued, under R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-8-14. The statute's wording sets two conditions: the document is in final form, and it is going out.
Reports sit on the list alongside drawings, so a final report you issue needs the same treatment as a plan sheet. Our overview of Rhode Island engineering seal requirements sets these duties next to the stamp design.
When can a Rhode Island engineer seal plans electronically?
When the plans go to a government agency, such as a municipality or a state agency, that accepts electronic documents, signatures and seals as the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act allows. 430-RICR-00-00-1.3.1(E)(3) ties the permission to the receiving agency.
Before sealing a plan set electronically, confirm that the agency you are submitting to takes electronic signatures and seals. If it does not, the permission in 430-RICR-00-00-1.3.1(E)(3) does not reach that submission, and a physical or printed seal is the route that remains.
When is affixing a Rhode Island seal forbidden?
After your certificate of registration has expired. R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-8-14 also bars affixing the seal to work you were not responsible for, or using it to help another person evade the engineering chapter of the law.
The two misuse rules apply even while your registration is current. The seal belongs on your own responsible work, and lending it or applying it to someone else's project falls outside what the statute permits. More on the stamp as a professional credential is in our article on the Rhode Island engineer stamp.
What should you supply when ordering a Rhode Island engineer stamp?
Your registered name, your serial number and, if one has been assigned, your engineering discipline. The legend Registered Professional Engineer is fixed, and the standard build is a 2 inch square, so neither needs input from you.
- Registered name: copied from your registration.
- Serial number: checked digit by digit.
- Discipline: included only if assigned.
- Device: stamp, self-inking stamp or embosser.
How do you check a Rhode Island stamp impression before use?
Stamp a test sheet and read every line: your registered name, your serial number, your assigned discipline where it applies, and the legend Registered Professional Engineer. Each element should be complete and legible at the manufactured size.
Then sign and date the test sheet as you will on a final document, and confirm the date field is easy to find and fill beside the impression.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Rhode Island stamp have to be square?
No cited rule sets a shape. The stamp is manufactured as a 2 inch square as a production standard, not because any rule requires that outline.
Is a self-inking stamp acceptable?
Yes. The rule's stamp/seal wording covers inked stamps, including self-inking models, as well as embossers and facsimiles.
Can I send an electronically sealed plan to an agency that only takes paper?
No. The electronic permission in 430-RICR-00-00-1.3.1(E)(3) applies to agencies that accept electronic documents, signatures and seals. For any other agency, use the physical seal or a printed facsimile.
Is a printed facsimile of my seal valid on paper sets?
Yes. R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-8-14 accepts a facsimile of the seal, and the Board's rule repeats that allowance.
Can I let a colleague use my seal on a job I did not oversee?
No. The statute forbids affixing the seal to work you were not responsible for and forbids using it to help another person evade the law.
