What are the exact dimensions of the Kansas seal?
A 1 5/8 inch outer circle around a 1 1/16 inch inner circle. Kan. Admin. Regs. 66-6-1(a) states both as exact figures, with no range, so the die is built to those two measurements.
The ring between the circles is a little over a quarter inch wide, and ARCHITECT runs along its lower part. Measure both circles on the proof, not just the outside.
Can you choose a rubber stamp, embosser or digital seal?
Yes, any of the three. Kan. Admin. Regs. 66-6-1(a) lets architects seal with a rubber stamp, an embosser or a digital version, and none of the three is favored over the others.

Where do the signature and date go?
Across the seal, added after the seal is on the document. Kan. Admin. Regs. 66-6-1(b)(1) calls for your signature, whether handwritten or an authenticated digital one, to cross the impression together with the date, rather than sit beside it.
That shapes the die. Keep the center of the seal open enough to sign through, and test with your usual pen so the signature stays readable over the lettering.
What makes a Kansas digital signature valid?
Four conditions in Kan. Admin. Regs. 66-6-1(b)(3), (4). The signature must be unique to you, capable of verification, under your sole control, and bound to the document so that altering any of its data invalidates the signature.
Check your signing software against each condition before relying on it. The last one is easy to test directly: change a signed file and confirm the signature shows as invalid.
Which documents must be sealed in Kansas?
Every document, which the rule spells out as including drawings, technical reports, records, papers and original land descriptions used to convey an interest in real property. The duty sits in Kan. Admin. Regs. 66-6-1(c), (d), (e).
The duty is subject to exemptions in the practice statutes. Those exemptions are not listed on this page, so check the statutes themselves before treating any document as exempt.
Can you seal after your Kansas license expires?
No. Under Kan. Stat. Ann. § 74-7023(d), once a license has expired or been revoked, no one may apply its seal to any document. That bar lifts only when the license is renewed or reissued.
The ban is not limited to the licensee, so it covers staff or colleagues using your seal as well. Keep the device secure during any gap in licensure.
How often do Kansas architect licenses renew?
On a two-year cycle set by K.A.R. 66-6-10(a). That regulation also provides an inactive status, which still takes renewal and the fee but drops continuing education, plus an emeritus status open to licensees aged 60 or older.

How do you test the seal before first use?
Stamp a blank sheet and measure both circles against 1 5/8 inches outside and 1 1/16 inches inside. Then read every element, confirm ARCHITECT sits in the lower ring, and check your name and number against the license.
Finish by signing and dating across the test impression with your normal pen. If the signature disappears into the lettering, try a different pen or lighter inking before you seal live documents.

Frequently asked questions
Would a 1 3/4 inch Kansas seal work?
No. The rule states an exact outer diameter of 1 5/8 inches, so a larger seal does not match. The inner circle is fixed at 1 1/16 inches as well.
Does the across-the-seal rule apply to a digital seal?
Yes. The rule allows an authenticated digital signature, and like a handwritten one it goes across the seal together with the date. That digital signature also has to meet the four conditions in Kan. Admin. Regs. 66-6-1(b)(3), (4).
Do the four digital conditions apply to the seal image or to the signature?
The signature. The four conditions describe what a digital signature must do. The seal itself may be digital under the device rule, and no separate test for the seal image is stated in the provisions cited here.
Do I need a new seal if my name changes?
The seal carries the name printed on your license, so a seal carrying a former name stops matching once the license reflects the change. Order a new one at that point.
Can I sign beside the seal to keep the number readable?
No. The rule puts the signature and date across the seal. Choose a pen and ink that let the signature cross the impression while the printed number stays legible underneath.
