Navigating the Requirements: Landscape Architect Stamp in Michigan Made Easy Feature Image

A Michigan landscape architect seal must carry your licensed name, your landscape architect license number and the legends Licensed Landscape Architect and State of Michigan, laid out in the board approved design. Plans, specifications and reports go out stamped when filed with a public authority. The cited sources set no size, device, signature or electronic rule. This page covers the face, filing, lapse and ordering.

What must a Michigan landscape architect seal contain?

Five elements under Mich. Comp. Laws § 339.2210(1). The face carries the name on your license, your license number as a landscape architect, two legends reading Licensed Landscape Architect and State of Michigan, and it follows the design the board approved in the rule.

The first four are text. The fifth governs how that text is arranged, so the face is not a free design. Order your name in its licensed form and check the license number on the proof digit by digit. Michigan landscape architect stamp requirements takes each element in turn.

Why does the board approved design matter?

Because it is one of the required elements. The seal has to follow the design the board approved and the rule sets out, so a stock layout that merely contains the right words is not enough on its own.

Treat the design in the rule as the template and fit your name and number into it. When you review a proof, compare it with the design in the rule, not with a seal from another profession or another state. Our Michigan landscape architect seal design guide shows the arrangement.

Which documents must be stamped?

Plans, specifications and reports that you prepared or that were prepared under your supervision, when they are filed with a public authority. That is the scope of Mich. Comp. Laws § 339.2210.

The trigger is filing. A plan set, specification or report going to a public authority carries your seal at that moment. Supervision counts too, so work your staff prepare under your direction is stamped with your seal, not theirs.

Do you sign and date next to the Michigan seal?

Article 22 does not require it. Mich. Comp. Laws § 339.2210 calls for the seal and is silent on a signature, a date and signing across the impression. The statutory duty is to stamp plans, specifications and reports when filed.

Silence is not a ban. Nothing in the seal provisions stops you from signing and dating in your title block. The seal law itself, though, imposes a stamping duty only.

What size and shape must the seal be?

Michigan sets neither. Neither Article 22 nor the Landscape Architects General Rules gives a diameter, and no shape is stated, so the size of the seal is a practical decision.

That finding rests on a full reading of R 339.19001 to R 339.19049, part 5 on seal requirements included, and of MCL 339.2201 to 339.2211. Size the seal so the board approved design and your full licensed name stay readable. A longer handbook on Michigan landscape architect stamps discusses sizing.

Which device can you use?

None is named. The Michigan landscape architect provisions do not say whether the seal is inked, embossed or electronic, which is an unusual gap for a Michigan seal rule. Mich. Comp. Laws § 339.2210(1) simply requires the seal.

The statute's verb is stamped: documents are stamped with the seal when filed. With no device rule to follow, choose one whose impression reads clearly on the sheets you file. An inked stamp gives a visible mark that holds up when the filed set is copied or scanned.

Can you use an electronic seal?

The landscape architect seal provisions do not address it. Michigan's electronic seal and electronic signature definitions sit in MCL 339.2007(3), and they are limited to that section and section 2008 by their own words.

Section 2210, the landscape architect seal section, is outside that limit, so the Article 20 definitions do not reach it. Nothing in the sources read gives landscape architects an electronic seal option or a method for creating one.

What if your license is not in full force?

Then using the seal is a disciplinary matter. Mich. Comp. Laws § 339.2210(2) treats endorsing a document with the seal while your license is not fully in force as grounds for discipline, with penalties under Article 6.

The rule looks at the date you endorse, not the date you ordered the seal. Keep the license in full force before you stamp any plan, specification or report for filing. Getting your professional landscape architect stamp in Michigan covers the licensing side.

What should you send with your order?

Your name exactly as licensed, your license number, and your preferred device and size. The two legends and the board approved design are fixed, so we set them to the rule.

Send your name in the exact form your license shows, since the rule calls for your name as licensed. Ordering a Michigan landscape architect stamp or seal walks through the order steps.

How do you check a new impression?

Stamp a test sheet and compare it with the board approved design in the rule. Then confirm your licensed name, every digit of the license number and both legends are legible, on the original and on a copy.

A copy test matters because a filed set may be copied or scanned later. If fine lettering fills in or fades, move up a size or change devices before stamping a filing.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Michigan seal show an expiration date?

No date is among the five required elements. The face holds your name, license number, the two legends and the board approved design, and nothing ties it to a renewal date.

Does handing plans to a private client trigger the stamping duty?

The duty in Mich. Comp. Laws § 339.2210 is written around filing with a public authority. That is the trigger the statute states.

Is an embosser allowed?

The provisions neither allow nor forbid one by name. Because documents are stamped when filed and filed sets may be copied, check that an embossed mark shows on a copy before relying on it alone.

Can I stamp a revision while my license is lapsed?

No. Endorsing any document with the seal while your license is not fully in force falls under Mich. Comp. Laws § 339.2210(2), and a revision is still a document you are endorsing.

Can I reuse a seal made for another credential?

No. The face has to carry your landscape architect license number and both landscape architect legends, and follow the board approved design, under Mich. Comp. Laws § 339.2210(1).

Once your licensed name and number are confirmed, choose a device from our Michigan stamps and seals collection and compare the first impression with the board approved design before you file.
