Navigating the Guidelines: Landscape Architect Seal Requirements Made Easy Feature Image

Of the 54 jurisdictions compared here, 26 write a diameter for the landscape architect seal into their rules, 21 state no size, and 30 accept an electronic or digital seal. Nebraska does not license landscape architects, and the U.S. Virgin Islands prescribes no seal for them. Minnesota makes the seal optional and requires a signed certification block, Nevada's Board supplies the seal, and the District of Columbia and New Jersey rows leave the face unconfirmed. This page compares seal wording, size, devices, electronic use, signing and lapse across all 54 and links each state hub.

What does a landscape architect seal show in most states?

Thirty-eight of the 54 rows call for the same core: your name, your license, registration or certificate number, and a title for the profession. In 34 of those the face also names the state, as it does in Alabama, Kentucky and Utah.

A few faces add an emblem. Texas sets the Texas star above your number, New York centers the Great Seal of New York, Rhode Island prints Registered over the state emblem, and New Hampshire rings the seal with twelve leaves. Wisconsin adds your city, while Puerto Rico allows nothing beyond its five items.

At the thin end, Connecticut fixes only the legend, Maine lists no elements, Vermont leaves the design to the Director, and Maryland asks for just your name and license number.

Which states fix the number format or the exact legend?

Five rows set a format for the number. Alaska takes numerals only, Missouri puts PLA in front, Virginia uses a Lic. No. line with the last six digits, Indiana lets you drop the LA letters, and Puerto Rico prints the license serial number.

Florida fixes STATE OF FLORIDA and LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT word for word, Illinois requires its legend verbatim, Mississippi fixes the word order, and North Carolina keeps the N.C. abbreviation. Wyoming, Colorado and North Dakota join the title and the state name with a hyphen.

South Dakota lets Licensed or Registered precede Landscape Architect, Tennessee accepts State of Tennessee or Tennessee alone, and Iowa and Idaho leave room for content the board adds.

How do seal sizes compare from state to state?

Twenty-six rows write a diameter. Fifteen fix one size, from 1-1/2 inches in Arizona, Arkansas and Hawaii to 2 inches in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, Puerto Rico and Virginia. Six set a range, three give an approximate figure, and Texas and Utah set only a minimum.

California and South Dakota accept 1 to 2 inches, North Dakota and Wyoming 1-1/2 to 2, Wisconsin 1-5/8 to 2, and Indiana 1 5/8 to 1 7/8. Iowa and New York call for about 1 3/4 inches and Oregon for about 1-5/8; Texas and Utah set a 1-1/2 inch floor with no ceiling.

Massachusetts sets size through its printed figure, Rhode Island through Board approval, and Washington lets you scale the seal while it stays readable. Another 21 rows state no size, and the District of Columbia and New Jersey rows could not confirm one.

Which devices do the rules name?

Thirty rows name an inked or rubber stamp, and 25 name an embosser or a similar pressed seal. Delaware and West Virginia name only those two devices, while 14 rows, Alabama, Colorado and Montana among them, name no physical device.

Unusual entries include a transparent self-adhesive seal in Tennessee, a crimp hand stamp in Oregon, a digitally embedded seal in Wisconsin and a printed seal in Arkansas. Idaho names a rubber stamp or an electronic seal but no embosser.

In Minnesota the device is a regular seal, with a rubber stamp facsimile allowed on tracings or on paper a regular seal would damage. California lets you buy the stamp from any convenient source, and Virginia neither prescribes nor prohibits a device.

Which states accept an electronic or digital seal?

Thirty rows accept an electronic or digital seal, Kentucky, Texas and Wyoming among them. Eleven have no provision, including California, Georgia and Louisiana, and four rows (New Jersey, West Virginia, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia) leave the question unconfirmed.

Conditions vary. Kentucky allows it once six conditions in Section 2 are met, Ohio lists conditions that must all hold, and Virginia requires unique identification, verifiability and your direct control. Alaska and Kansas apply digital signature tests along the same lines and add that altering the document voids the signature.

North Carolina allows electronic seals but makes stripping the seal the default, Guam accepts an approved electronic image but refuses facsimile or computer-generated signatures and dates, and Nevada issues the electronic stamp itself. Colorado's board may allow one by rule.

Where do the signature and date go?

Ten rows put your signature across the seal. In North Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, Kansas, Mississippi and Tennessee the date crosses it too. Indiana and Virginia want the signature beside the impression, and Louisiana and Ohio apply the seal on top of the signature.

Tennessee also carries the signature past the outer circle and bans rubber signature stamps. Idaho and South Dakota let you sign beside or across, Texas lets the signature cross the impression, and Alaska provides a signing space inside the seal.

Hawaii, Iowa and Minnesota route signing through a block, and Pennsylvania and Wisconsin each allow three seal and signature methods. On dates, Ohio, New York, Puerto Rico, West Virginia and South Carolina require no signing date, and the Indiana signature rule is silent on dating.

Which documents have to carry the seal?

The duty runs from every sheet to a single title page. Mississippi seals each original working drawing sheet, the project manual cover or index pages and every Addendum; Louisiana reaches contracts and estimates; Nevada wants the title page of each document signed, sealed and dated.

Washington limits specification sealing to the cover, title and table of contents pages. Wisconsin seals each sheet by default, but a bound volume may carry it on the title or index sheet alone if that sheet lists the rest and any other credential holder seals their own.

Oklahoma adds addenda and field orders, North Carolina adds letters or certificates giving a professional opinion, and Arkansas exempts presentation documents.

Can you seal after a license lapses or expires?

No, in the 17 rows that address it. Arizona, Georgia, Kansas, Nevada, Tennessee and 12 others bar sealing once the credential expires or is revoked, and several extend the bar to suspension. The other rows either have no seal or do not speak to sealing during a lapse.

Florida requires the seal to be returned or destroyed when registration ends and cancels the electronic signature too. Arizona also reaches anyone who causes or allows the use, and Tennessee bars everyone from using a seal whose named registrant is expired or revoked.

New Hampshire treats a voluntary surrender like a lapse, and Puerto Rico bars stamping during inactivity too. In Kansas, Maine and Minnesota, renewal or reissue restores the right to seal.

Which jurisdictions have no seal rule, an optional seal or an unconfirmed one?

Nebraska does not license landscape architects, and the U.S. Virgin Islands prescribes no landscape architect seal. Minnesota makes the seal optional, the New Jersey and District of Columbia rows leave the face unconfirmed, and in Nevada the Board supplies the seal.

In Nebraska no document has to carry a landscape architect seal, and buying a stamp is not a regulated purchase. Chapter 8 of the Virgin Islands code covers architects, engineers and land surveyors, with legends for those three alone. Minnesota instead requires a certification block with the prescribed sentence, your signature, typed or printed name, date and license number.

The District of Columbia sets seal elements in DCMR 17-1911, which could not be read; commercial permit plans filed with the Department of Buildings carry the stamp and signature of a design professional holding a District license. The New Jersey row cites N.J.A.C. 13:27 without retrieved codified text.

What if you hold licenses in more than one state?

Order a seal for each state. No row provides for a shared multistate seal, and the rows tie the number to the state that issued it: Iowa wants the number Iowa issued you, and North Dakota and Oklahoma each name their own license number.

A legend that names a state names only its own, and sizes conflict: a 2 inch Kentucky seal exceeds the 1 7/8 inch ceiling in Indiana. Titles differ too, from Professional Landscape Architect in Missouri and Iowa to Registered Landscape Architect in Alabama and Mississippi.

What should you supply when ordering a landscape architect seal?

Supply your name exactly as your license or certificate shows it, your number in the format your state sets, and any date the face must carry. Colorado, Oregon, Washington, California and Puerto Rico each print a date tied to your license.

Colorado shows the date you were licensed and Oregon your first registration date; Washington and Puerto Rico show your expiration date, and California your renewal date plus the sealing date. Arizona, North Dakota and Wyoming print a date label or date line.

Add any extra line or choice your rule allows, such as your city in Wisconsin or the Licensed or Registered prefix in South Dakota, and pick a device and size your rule names. In Nevada, the Board supplies the seal.

Frequently asked questions

Does renewing my license mean buying a new seal?

The rows point to one trigger: a date on the face that changes with renewal. Washington prints your expiration date and California your renewal date, so renewal reaches the device. Oregon prints your initial registration date, which never changes, and the Texas seal shows no date and keeps the same number, so it stays current.

Who decides the design when the rule says the board authorizes it?

The board or its equivalent. The Nevada Board issues the seal, the Guam Board sets the design, Vermont leaves it to the Director, and Michigan, Hawaii and Washington follow a board-authorized design. The Puerto Rico Junta also authorizes a special design, though Reglamento Núm. 7717 still fixes its size and contents.

Can the impression be scaled down for a small sheet?

Washington is the one row that lets you scale the seal, provided it stays readable. Arizona allows 1/16 inch either way, and range states such as North Dakota and Wisconsin let you choose any diameter inside their bounds. Single-figure rows such as Alabama and Puerto Rico give no allowance.

Does a landscape architecture firm need its own seal?

Not in the rows that mention firms. Guam prescribes no firm seal and requires no firm number on documents, and Puerto Rico has no certificate of authorization, so individuals seal and sign. None of the other rows addresses a firm seal.

What happens to the seal when I stop practicing?

Florida is the only row with a rule on it: when registration ends, the seal is returned or destroyed. Missouri imposes no duty to destroy or return it, Rhode Island and South Carolina say nothing about the device, and South Dakota holds you responsible for keeping the seal secure.

Does the impression have to reproduce on copies?

In several rows, yes. Florida judges the seal by what shows on a duplicate, Oklahoma requires an image on originals and duplicates, and Texas holds each device to a reproduction test. Illinois requires a seal that reproduces, and Iowa and Arkansas require a legible result.

Once your state row settles the wording, size and device, order from our landscape architect stamps and seals by state, and send your name, number and any face date exactly as your license shows them.
