Securing Your Professional Status: Wisconsin Landscape Architect Seal Requirements Unveiled Feature Image

A Wisconsin landscape architect seal must carry your city along with your credentialed name and your credential number, within an overall diameter of 1-5/8 to 2 inches. Embossed, inked, digitally printed and digitally embedded seals are all allowed. Every sheet carries the seal by default, with relief for bound volumes. This page covers content, size, devices, signing, sheets, electronic use and renewal.

What must a Wisconsin landscape architect seal include?

Three items under Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 2.02(1): your name as it appears on your credential, your credential number and your city. The city is part of the required content, so it needs its own line on the face.

Send all three with your order exactly as you want them to read. If you are reusing artwork from an earlier seal, confirm it has a city line before you approve it.

Our post on Wisconsin landscape architect stamp and seal guidelines covers the same content from a design angle.

What diameter does Wisconsin allow?

Anywhere from 1-5/8 inches to 2 inches overall. Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 2.02(1) sets both ends of that range, so a seal under 1-5/8 inches or over 2 inches in overall diameter falls outside the rule.

Inside the range, size for your content and your sheets. A larger diameter gives the name and city lines more room; a smaller one fits a tighter title block. For the wider rules this size sits within, see our post on Wisconsin's landscape architect stamp and seal requirements.

Which seal devices are permitted in Wisconsin?

Four: an ink stamp seal, an embossing seal, a seal printed digitally or a seal embedded digitally. That list comes from Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 2.02(3), which CR 24-028 replaced in full as of June 1, 2025.

Any of the four is lawful. An inked stamp sized within the range is a practical first device for paper sets, and a digital version covers electronic files.

How do you sign and date a sealed Wisconsin public document?

Use one of the three pairings A-E 2.02(7)(b) allows for documents filed as public documents. Each pairing puts a signature containing your name and the date together with the seal.

  • A seal placed physically, signed by hand in permanent ink with your name and the date.
  • A seal placed digitally, with the same kind of handwritten permanent-ink signature.
  • A seal placed digitally, with an electronic signature that includes your name and the date.

Keep a permanent-ink pen with the stamp for paper sets. For more on signing, see our post on the Wisconsin landscape architect certificate and signature.

Which sheets need a Wisconsin seal?

Every sheet, by default. Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 2.02(5) and (6) start from a sheet-by-sheet duty and then provide relief for bound volumes, which the next section explains.

Build the seal, signature and date into every sheet template so the default is met without extra steps at issue time.

When can one seal cover a Wisconsin bound volume?

When you prepared the bound volume, or directed and controlled its preparation, you may sign, seal and date only its title or index sheet, provided that sheet identifies every other sheet clearly.

A second condition applies. Sheets in the volume that another credential holder prepared must carry that person's own seal, so your single seal covers your work, not theirs. Our post on applying the stamp and seal in Wisconsin works through placement on a bound set.

Can a Wisconsin landscape architect seal electronically?

Yes. A-E 2.02(3) allows digitally printed and digitally embedded seals, and A-E 2.02(7)(b)3 allows an electronic signature alongside a seal placed digitally. Neither provision names a technology you must use.

Your electronic seal still carries your name, credential number and city, and the electronic signature has to contain your name and the date.

What does renewal or a lapse mean for a Wisconsin seal?

A-E 2.05(1) asks for nothing beyond the renewal fee when you renew within five years of expiration. The rules read for this page, Wis. Admin. Code §§ A-E 2.045 and A-E 2.05, do not address using the seal while a credential has lapsed.

The three required items, name, number and city, do not change at renewal. If your city changes, though, the city line on the face no longer matches, and the seal needs new artwork.

What should you send when ordering a Wisconsin seal?

Your credentialed name, your credential number, your city and the overall diameter you want between 1-5/8 and 2 inches. Add the device type, and say if you need a digital version too.

Ask for a proof and confirm the city line before approving it. Browse Wisconsin landscape architect stamp and seal products to compare devices.

How do you check a Wisconsin impression before use?

Stamp a test sheet, measure the overall diameter and confirm it falls between 1-5/8 and 2 inches. Then read the name, credential number and city against your credential.

Sign and date the test sheet the way you will on public documents, and scan it to confirm every line survives copying.

Frequently asked questions

Is an embosser still allowed after the 2025 rule change?

Yes. A-E 2.02(3), as recreated by CR 24-028 effective June 1, 2025, lists the embossing seal among the four permitted devices.

Can I pair an ink stamp seal with an electronic signature?

Not on a document filed as a public document. Under A-E 2.02(7)(b), a physically placed seal pairs only with a permanent-ink signature written by hand.

Does a digitally placed seal require an electronic signature?

No. A digitally placed seal can go with either a handwritten permanent-ink signature or an electronic signature, as long as each contains your name and the date.

Can a specification book carry the seal on one sheet only?

If it is a bound volume you prepared or directed and controlled, yes: the title or index sheet can carry your signature, seal and date, provided it clearly identifies all other sheets and any sheets from another credential holder carry that person's seal.

Is there a larger size allowed for large-format sheets?

No. A-E 2.02(1) caps the overall diameter at 2 inches, whatever the sheet size.

Once your city line and diameter are settled, order from our Wisconsin stamps and seals collection.
