Navigating through the Rules: Understanding Nevada Land Surveyor Stamp Regulations Feature Image

A Nevada land surveyor stamp is a circle of about 1.7 inches showing your name as licensed, your license number and the title Professional Land Surveyor, with your license expiration date as an option. You sign each impression legibly and add the stamping date. Electronic seals are permitted. This page covers each rule, the documents that need the stamp, and the ban on use after a lapse.

Size and shape Round, close to 1.7 inches across. Nev. Admin. Code § 625.610(2)
Device No device is named. The test applies to the image the device leaves. Nev. Admin. Code § 625.610(3), (10)

Documents Survey maps and records used to get permits, released for construction, or issued as final or formal documents to a third party, a public body or a client. Nev. Admin. Code §§ 625.610(8), (11), (12), 625.611, 625.612
Expired, suspended, revoked or retired Once the license has expired or been suspended or revoked, no one may stamp a document with the seal unless it is renewed or reissued. Retirement from practice carries the same bar. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 625.565(4), (5), (7)

What must a Nevada land surveyor stamp show?

Three fixed items and one optional one. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 625.383(1) calls for your name as licensed, your license number and the title Professional Land Surveyor, and it lets you add your license expiration date.

Use your name in the exact form on your license, not a shortened version. The legend is the full title, so a stamp that abbreviates it or swaps in a different profession does not match the statute. Our post on Nevada land surveyor seal guidelines gives more background.

How do you sign and date a stamped Nevada document?

Sign legibly, either across the face of the impression or right next to it, then add the date you applied the stamp. Nev. Admin. Code § 625.610(4), (9) makes the signature what validates the stamp.

If your stamp omits your expiration date, write that date on the document as well. So a sheet stamped with a dateless stamp carries four things: the impression, your signature, the stamping date and your expiration date.

Should you put your expiration date on the stamp?

You can choose either way. If the stamp carries the date, it is on every impression automatically. If it does not, NAC 625.610(4) has you write your license expiration date on each document along with the stamping date.

It is an ordering decision with a trade-off. A date engraved on the die cannot change, so it will show the old date once your license is renewed to a new one. A stamp without it lasts longer but adds a handwritten entry to every sheet you stamp.

Which stamping device should a Nevada surveyor buy?

An inked device whose mark comes out opaque and permanent, such as a rubber stamp or an inked seal. NAC 625.610(3)(a) does not name a device; it judges the image the device produces, so the impression itself has to pass.

That makes ink the safe route, because an inked impression gives you the solid, lasting image the rule looks for. Our guide to choosing a Nevada professional land surveyor stamp has more on selection.

How big is a Nevada land surveyor stamp?

About 1.7 inches in diameter, and round. Nev. Admin. Code § 625.610(2) gives that single figure for the stamp, so it is the size to order rather than a starting point for something larger or smaller.

The rule says approximately, so treat 1.7 inches as the target rather than as a minimum or a maximum. Measure across the full outside edge of the impression when you check it.

Who is barred from using a Nevada stamp after a license lapses?

Any person. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 625.565(4) makes it unlawful for anyone to impress a document with a surveyor's stamp once that license has expired, or been suspended or revoked, until the license is renewed or reissued.

The bar reaches beyond the licensee. An office that keeps a former surveyor's stamp on hand cannot use it on documents after that license lapses. Renewal or reissue of the license lifts it.

Which Nevada survey documents need the stamp?

Nev. Admin. Code §§ 625.610(8), (11), (12), 625.611, 625.612 reaches survey maps and records that go in for permits, get released for construction, or leave your office as final or formal documents for a client, a public authority or any third party.

The test is where the document is going, not what it is called. A map headed to a permit counter, a construction crew or a client as a final product falls inside it. Our post on whether a Nevada surveyor seal meets the requirements is a useful cross-check.

Are electronic seals allowed for Nevada surveyors?

Yes. Nev. Admin. Code § 625.610(10) permits them, and it is written around performance rather than technology: it sets conditions an electronic seal has to meet instead of naming a product or format.

Those conditions are in the rule text and are not reproduced here, so read subsection (10) before relying on an electronic seal. The rule names no product or file format.

What should you send with a Nevada stamp order?

Your name as it appears on your license and your license number. Decide whether you want your expiration date on the face, and if so, supply it exactly. The title and the 1.7 inch round size are fixed.

Then choose an inked device so the impression is opaque and permanent. For a broader look at the product, see our post on the Nevada land surveyor seal.

How do you check a Nevada impression before first use?

Stamp a test sheet and measure the diameter against 1.7 inches. Read your name, your number and the full Professional Land Surveyor title, plus the expiration date if you ordered it on the face.

Confirm the image is solid rather than faint or patchy, then sign and date the test sheet the way you will on real work, to see every required item together.

Frequently asked questions

If my stamp shows the expiration date, do I still write it by hand?

No. The handwritten expiration date is needed only when the stamp leaves it off. You still add the date you stamped the document.

Is a 1.5 inch or 2 inch stock stamp acceptable?

The rule gives approximately 1.7 inches and no range, so 1.7 inches is the size to order; a nearby stock size is not what the rule describes.

Does renewing my license restore use of the stamp?

Yes. The ban in NRS 625.565(4) holds until renewal or reissue of the license, so a renewed or reissued license brings the stamp back into use.

Can I keep using my stamp after I retire from practice?

No. NRS 625.565(5) applies the same prohibition after retirement from practice, so a retired surveyor's stamp stays off documents.

Does an electronic seal have to use particular software?

No technology is named. Subsection (10) states conditions for the result, so any method you use has to meet those conditions rather than match a listed product.

With your licensed name and number ready, order from our Nevada stamps and seals collection and check the proof at 1.7 inches before production.
