ESS custom stamps come in fixed model sizes, from a 7/16 in. MaxLight round to an 8 x 10 in. wood handle stamp, and each product page states the impression area and, for most models, the most lines the plate can hold. Among the self-inking Trodat bodies the largest plate is 2-3/4 x 4-1/2 in.; among the pre-inked MaxLight stamps it is 3-1/8 x 4-1/2 in. What sizes do ESS custom stamps come in?
Each custom stamp is a named model with a set impression size, except the wood handle stamp ordered by line count, which has no fixed size. The table groups the models into six families, with wood handle split by how it is sold.

What sizes are the Trodat Printy rectangular and square stamps?
Trodat Printy and Ideal self-inkers range from the 1/2 in. square Trodat 4921 to the 1-1/2 x 3 in. Trodat 4926, which takes up to 8 lines. Fifteen of the nineteen models are rectangles and four are squares.

Three models here are worth a closer look. The Trodat 4914 prints a 1 x 2-1/2 in. rectangle with up to 5 lines. The Trodat 4922 is a 13/16 in. square that takes up to 3 lines.
The Trodat 4921 is the 1/2 in. square. Its product copy claims seven lines on a face that small, so the table leaves its count as Not listed.
What sizes are the Trodat round self-inking stamps?
Trodat round self-inkers come in eight diameters, 1/2 in. through 2 in. The 2 in. Trodat 46050 takes up to 8 lines, and the listed count falls with the diameter, down to 3 lines on the 1 in. and 3/4 in. models.

Trodat Professional models are heavy duty, metal frame self-inkers from 1 x 1-5/8 in. (Trodat 5200) up to 2-3/4 x 4-1/2 in. (Trodat 5212), the largest Trodat face ESS lists. The 5211 and 5212 take up to 9 lines each.

Some Professional sizes repeat a Printy size. The Trodat 5205 and the Printy 4915 both print 1 x 2-3/4 in. at up to 6 lines, and the round Trodat 52045 matches the Printy 4645 at 1-3/4 in. and 7 lines.

MaxLight XL2 pre-inked stamps come in 22 sizes, from a 7/16 in. round to a 3-1/8 x 4-1/2 in. rectangle. The Slim and Super Slim line adds eight more: six rectangles, one 1-5/8 in. square and one 2 in. round.

Two MaxLight models share an 11/16 x 1-15/16 in. face: the XL2-115 lists up to 4 lines and the XL2-42 lists no count. The XL2-55, at 3/16 x 2-1/2 in., is a one line strip, and the XL2-720 stretches a 1 in. tall face to 4 in. long.

On these line count stamps the impression follows your text. Its size comes from the font and point size you choose, and the size menu for them tops out at 18 point.
How do I choose a stamp size for my text?
Size the stamp from your wording. Count your lines, count the characters in the longest one, and pick a point size; then choose a model whose line count covers the lines and whose long side covers the longest line at that size.
- Lines. Compare your line count with the Maximum lines column for the family you want.
- Longest line. Divide its character count by the characters per inch for your point size: about 14 at 8 point, 11 at 10 point and 9 at 12 point. The answer is the plate length that line needs.
- Model. Choose a model whose long side is at least that length and whose line count is at least yours.
A 22 character line at 12 point works out to 22 divided by 9, or roughly 2-1/2 in. The Trodat 4914 (1 x 2-1/2 in., up to 5 lines) covers it on paper, while the 2-3/8 in. long Trodat 4913 falls just short. The chart figures are approximate, so leave some room instead of sizing to the exact inch.
Preset stamps sold by line count cover two specific jobs. Addresses come in 3 line and 4 line self-inking versions and a 3 line regular rubber address stamp; check endorsements come in 3 line and 4 line self-inking versions plus a 4 line regular rubber version. Their pages give line counts but no plate size.

Should my stamp be rectangular, square or round?
Let the layout decide. A rectangle gives the most line length for its height, which suits stacked lines of text. A square or round gives equal width and height, which suits a compact block of text or a circular design.
Squares on offer: the Trodat 4921, 4922, 4923 and 4924, the 2 in. MaxLight XL2-5050, the 1-5/8 in. Slim 4141, and wood handle squares from 1 x 1 in. to 8 x 8 in.
Rounds on offer: eight Trodat rounds from 1/2 in. to 2 in., the Trodat Professional 52045 at 1-3/4 in., five MaxLight rounds from 7/16 in. to 2 in., the 2 in. Slim 50R, and wood handle rounds from 1/2 in. to 8 in.
On a round face the full diameter is only available across the middle, so lines near the top and bottom have less room than the center line. Plan the longest line for the middle of a round layout.
How do I read letter height against a stamp size?
ESS publishes a letter height chart that pairs each point size with an approximate character height and a characters per inch figure. Read it against a plate's length to estimate how much text one line will hold.
The chart runs from 8 point, with capitals about 5/64 in. tall and about 14 characters to the inch, up to 48 point, at about 1/2 in. tall and 2 to the inch. At 12 point, which the order menu labels most common, the figures are 1/8 in. and 9.
Take the 3 in. long Trodat 4918 as an example. At 12 point one line holds about 27 characters; drop to 8 point and it holds roughly 42, while 24 point leaves room for only 15 or so. What size is a PE stamp or a notary stamp?
Professional seals are not chosen from this chart. The size of an engineer, architect, land surveyor or notary seal is set state by state, so start from the requirements page for your profession, not from a custom stamp model.

Is the listed size the whole stamp or just the printing area?
It is the printing area. Each size on this page is the largest text plate or impression area named in the model's product title and description, which is the space your text or artwork can fill.
Why do some models show Not listed for lines?
Their product copy gives no count worth relying on. The Trodat 4921 description claims seven lines on a 1/2 in. square, and the Trodat 4612 and MaxLight XL2-42 give no count at all. Wood handle stamps sold by size carry inconsistent counts, so only their sizes appear here.
What is the largest custom stamp ESS makes?
The 8 x 10 in. wood handle stamp, with an 8 in. round as the largest circle. Among stamps that carry their own ink, the MaxLight XL2-800 is largest at 3-1/8 x 4-1/2 in., and the Trodat 5212 leads the self-inkers at 2-3/4 x 4-1/2 in.
Which models hold the most lines?
Among fixed size models, the Trodat 5211, Trodat 5212 and MaxLight XL2-700 each list up to 9 lines. Wood handle stamps sold by line count go further, up to 15 lines, with the impression sized around your text.
Do stamps of the same size always hold the same number of lines?
No. At 2 in. across, the Trodat 46050 and Slim 50R list 8 lines while the MaxLight XL2-655 lists 7. At 1-3/16 in., the Trodat 4630 lists 4 and the XL2-495 lists 5. Order by the line count on the exact model.
Which models are meant for a single line?
The Trodat 4910 (3/8 x 1-3/32 in.) and MaxLight XL2-55 (3/16 x 2-1/2 in.) are the fixed size models listed at 1 line, and ESS also sells a 1 line wood handle stamp. The Trodat 4916 and 4917 are 3/8 in. strips listed at 2 lines.
