What must a Rhode Island land surveyor seal show?
Four items, all set by 435-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.6. The state emblem and your registration number share the center of the face. Your name sits over the emblem, and the title Professional Land Surveyor sits under it.

What size and shape is the seal?
A square of approximately 1.5 inches on each side. The rule frames the figure as an approximation and gives no separate numeric tolerance, so a die cut at 1.5 inches square matches the published size directly.

Which device does the rule call for?
An individual stamp that prints the seal. Under 435-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.6 the Board lends every registered surveyor a right to buy that stamp. The one alternative the rule names is a digital facsimile, which may stand in for the hand stamp.

Where does an embosser fit in?
The rule does not mention embossers. It neither allows nor prohibits owning one, and the instrument it requires remains a stamp that imprints the seal. An embosser is therefore not one of the named ways to seal a Rhode Island survey.
The rule also has a limited reach. It governs the mark that seals the document, not every other mark that may appear on the same sheet. Keep the imprinting stamp as your sealing device and treat anything else as separate from it.
Where do the signature and date go?
Your signature is written by hand in ink across the seal, and the date goes below the seal. The rule does not allow an electronic signature or an electronic date, so a pen finishes every sealed sheet.
Lay out the title block with this in mind. The signature crosses the square, so the space around it needs room for a pen stroke, and there has to be clear space beneath the square for the handwritten date.
Can the seal be applied digitally?
Yes, the seal image can. A digital facsimile is allowed in place of the hand stamp, but the rule sets no cryptographic standard, names no certificate authority and describes no authentication step. The signature and date still have to be handwritten in ink.
That shapes the workflow. You can place the digital seal on a drawing, print the sheet, then sign through the image and date it underneath with a pen. A file whose only signature is typed or electronic falls outside the rule.
Which documents need the seal?
Every document prepared for use in Rhode Island by you or under your responsible control, which takes in drawings, reports and other documents. The seal goes on only where you are in responsible control of the project itself.

What happens to the stamp when your registration lapses?
It is surrendered. Under 435-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.6, a lapse in registration means giving up the stamp rather than keeping it on hand for later use. The right to buy it came from the Board on loan to begin with.
Keep renewal dates in view. A lapse costs you the stamp itself, which can leave an active project waiting while you sort out the registration.

How do you check the first impression?
Stamp a scrap sheet and measure it. Each side should come out near 1.5 inches, the outline should be square, and the four elements should sit where the rule puts them: emblem and number at center, name above, title below.
Then sign across the test impression in ink and write a date beneath it, exactly as you will on a finished sheet. That confirms your title block has room for all three before the stamp goes into daily use.
