What goes on a Rhode Island architect seal, and where?
Five items in fixed positions under 415-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.7(A). Your name sits in the upper annular space and the word Architect in the lower one. The state emblem and your certificate number go inside the inner circle, and the word Registered goes below the emblem.
The annular space is the ring-shaped band between the outer and inner circles. Rhode Island splits that band into an upper part for your name and a lower part for the profession, then reserves the center for the emblem, the word Registered and your number. Position matters as much as content: a layout that swaps the name into the center or moves Architect to the top does not follow the arrangement the rule sets.

How large is the Rhode Island seal?
The outer circle measures exactly one and one-half inches across and the inner circle exactly one and one-eighth inches. Both figures are fixed by 415-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.7(A), so this is neither a minimum you can scale up nor a range you can choose from.
Those two figures leave a band 3/16 of an inch wide between the circles, and that band holds your name above and Architect below. A long name therefore needs careful letter sizing rather than a bigger seal. When the proof arrives, measure both diameters with a ruler before approving it. How do you get a stamp when the Board controls it?
Through the Board's loaned right. Under 415-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.7(A), the Board lends every architect the right to buy a personal stamp that can print the seal. The device on paper is a hand stamp, and your right to buy one runs through the Board.
That makes the purchase different from an ordinary supply order. The loaned right is the precondition, so make sure you hold it before you place an order. The rule settles the device itself: a hand stamp that prints the seal described above, with the electronically generated seal, covered further down, as the second route.
Where do the name and the date go?
The name crosses the seal and the date sits beneath it, under 415-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.7(A). The same provision also permits electronic signature and electronic dating, so the electronic route is open for both steps.
Across means the name crosses the impression itself. Leave clear space under the seal on each sheet so the date has somewhere to go without landing on title block text or notes.
Which Rhode Island documents must be sealed?
Every document you prepare, or that is prepared under your responsible control, once it is meant for use in Rhode Island. 415-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.7(A) lists drawing sets, specifications or a project manual, and any other documents, so the duty reaches past the drawings.
Two tests decide it: whether the work was prepared by you or under your responsible control, and whether it is for use in Rhode Island. A specification book or project manual counts just as a drawing sheet does, and the phrase other documents keeps the list open.
Can you seal and sign electronically in Rhode Island?
Yes. 415-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.7(A) lets an electronically generated seal take the place of the hand stamp and allows electronic signature and dating. That gives architects a second route beside the Board-controlled stamp.
Build the electronic image to the same geometry and layout as the stamp: a 1 1/2 inch outer circle, a 1 1/8 inch inner circle, your name above, Architect below, and the emblem, Registered and your certificate number in the center. Keep the file where only you can apply it, because it does the job of the stamp.
What happens to the stamp when your registration lapses?
It goes back to the Board. Under 415-RICR-00-00-1 §§ 1.7(A), 1.10, a lapsed architect's stamp is returned rather than kept, which fits a scheme where the Board held the right to purchase it from the start.

How do you proof a Rhode Island impression before use?
Stamp a test sheet and measure it. The outer circle should read 1 1/2 inches and the inner circle 1 1/8 inches, with each of the five items in its assigned place and every character readable.

Is an embosser acceptable as the Rhode Island architect seal?
The two routes 415-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.7(A) describes are a hand stamp and an electronically generated seal. An embosser is not named as either, so it should not be ordered as your Rhode Island seal.
Can I make the seal slightly larger so a long name fits?
No. Both diameters are exact figures rather than minimums. Fit the name by adjusting letter size and spacing inside the 1 1/2 inch outer circle.
Do I own the stamp once I buy it?
You pay for it, but the right to buy it is lent by the Board, and on lapse the Board gets the stamp back under 415-RICR-00-00-1 §§ 1.7(A), 1.10. Treat it as held on the Board's terms.
Does the date go inside the seal?
No. The date belongs below the seal, and it is not one of the five items on the face. Only your name crosses the impression.
Can I sign beside the seal instead of across it?
The rule places your name across the seal, so a name written only beside the impression does not match 415-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.7(A). Sign through it and date below.
